That’s the worst part. I got totally ripped off by the place that I rented the scooter from (THEY had my passport so I think they knew they had leverage to get money out of me). I got a killer rate on renting the scooter for a month, but they made up the difference when their helmet got stolen and they “had to replace it.” Oh well. It’s just money. There are bigger things in life to worry about. I replaced the helmet, got my ID fromt the police station, and went about my day. Lesson learned in the process? Don’t leave your helmet looped over the handlebar; use the hook under the seat (the one that can be locked when the seat is down).

I DID get my ID back after paying the ticket at the Police Station on the east side of town near the river (actually a couple blocks from the American Embassy). In terms of drug charges, n Thailand, the law prescribes the death penalty for carrying category I narcotics (heroin) “for the purpose of disposal”. The death penalty for drug trafficking has not been imposed since 2004, but rehabilitation counselling is often imposed on convicted drug users. It doesn’t surprise me they cranked up the fine (this is usually done by crooked cops who are looking to “get rich quick” off of travelers… and it works most of the time considering the alternative). Consult an attorney if you think it’s necessary, but when it comes down to jail time or a hefty fine, I think I’d find a way to pay the fine and move on.

A friend of mine was set up for weed scam and they currently have his state drivers license as well stating that he would have to bring $1000 to them.

He’s not expecting to get his license back, but do you think he needs to leave Thailand immediately? Do you think there might be a risk that they will block him from leaving in the future given that all they have is his id and not his passport? I know the situation is a bit different from yours.
